What is Active Directory?

What is Active Directory? Active Directory is a distributed directory service, special-purpose database. That is included with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. Active Directory is based on Domain Name System (DNS) and lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP). Active Directory clients use DNS and LDAP to locate and access any type of resource on the network. Integrated with Active Directory are many of the applications and services that previously required a separate directory and User id/password to be managed for each application or service.
